Sliding Barn Door: Do You Remove Trim When Installing a Barn Door?

11 May 2022 0 Comments

Want to install a sliding barn door in your room, but be put off by the door trim?

There is no question that it is challenging to remove the existing door frame. For that, you will face the following problems: How to remove the trim without destroying the wall and the opening? How to handle the construction material? etc.

Don’t worry. It's not that tough. Signstek is going to show you how to install a sliding barn door with the trim.

Should you remove trim when installing a barn door?

You don’t have to remove the trim!

Wondering how to cover the holes in the door frame left by the hinges? Take it easy. It can be a piece of cake. You just need to buy some quick-dry spackle to fill the area.

The rest is for the door to cover the opening.

Does a barn door leave a gap?

If you know how to install sliding barn doors, you know that heavy-duty sliding barn doors hang from sliding barn door hardware outside the room. There are gaps between the wall and the barn door. And the barn door is bigger than the opening.

How to measure for a sliding barn door if there is trim?

To completely cover the doorway and the trim, add extra inches to your measurements.

How wide should your barn door be?

For the width, measure from the outside of the trim from the left to the right.

But that’s not all. To protect your privacy, add 1 to 2 inches on each side. For example, if you measure the opening and the trim is 36 inches wide, choose a 38 to 40 inches wide door.

How high should your barn door be?

This depends on where the sliding barn door hardware rail is located. Most people install the sliding barn door track right above the door. And you can also place the sliding barn door rail halfway between the top of the trim and the ceiling.

Wherever you will place the track, measure from the track to the floor. Then, your door should be 0.5-1 inch higher than the floor to avoid grinding on the floor. Subtract 0.5 to 1 inch from the measurement.

How long should the rail be?

To completely open and close your sliding barn door, you will need a sliding barn door rail that is twice the width of the door. If you are going to install a double sliding barn door, the track should be four times as long as one of the doors.

When you select a sliding barn door hardware kit, quality is the most important thing. It will determine how long your sliding barn door can last.
